Most postgrad colleges prefer PGCET to CMAT

A number of colleges offering MBA and MCA courses in the State will promote and endorse the PGCET (Post Graduate Common Entrance Test) as the main entrance test for admissions to the courses from this year.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the Karnataka Private Post Graduate Colleges’ Association (KPPGCA) here on Saturday. The KPPGCA is consortium of 169 colleges that includes the likes of M S Ramaiah College Of Arts, Science & Commerce, MSRIT, PESIT, PES Institute of Technology & Management to name a few.  The government recently constituted a committee to look into the process of bringing back the PGCET after initially scrapping it for a year in favour of AICTE’s CMAT (Common Management Admission Test).

The committee comprises registrars of a number of State universities. VTU vice-chancellor, H Maheshappa is the chairperson of the committee. A number of deliberations by the committee on the matter is expected in the coming days.
“Member colleges will be taking a number of measures to promote PGCET as the main entrance exam instead of the CMAT. We are also finalising the date of the test as well as the counselling.

A tentative date of June 8 for the test is presently being discussed,” said a spokesperson for KPPGCA who did not want to be named. While government quota seats will be allotted only on the basis of the PGCET scores, colleges can also use the same scores for admission to management seats, said the spokesperson. “If the seats still remain vacant or are surrendered after the counselling, they can be filled by KMAT (Karnataka Management Aptitude Test) scores or those of national entrance test like MAT (Management Aptitude Test) and CAT (Common Admission Test),” the spokesperson said.

Although the State government adopted the CMAT last year, a few publicity drives led to low response from students and caused confusion. This led to scores of MBA and MCA seats going vacant last year.
